Milestones and New Growth

We made it! Peace Garden Pgh is moving into its fifth year. A big thank you goes out to everyone who has helped get us here. We have seen a lot of growth and an abundance of change in our gardens over the past few years. This year will probably be no different.

Looking forward to this year, the Einhorn Community Garden in the Southside already has big plans in store. Not only do we already have winter beds in place (pictured below), but we also have a partnership in place with Fresh From The Farm Juices & Salads to donate some of the extra herbs from the garden in exchange for compost material! 

We are excited to have you back in the garden as soon as the weather breaks! Be sure to check back soon for updates. 

Southside Garden Tour -August 18

Good news for all of the supporters of Peace Garden, Pgh and the garden at 11th and Bingham!

Our community garden will be featured on the first annual Southside Garden Tour hosted by Green n'at on Saturday, August 18th. The tour will start at 18th and Carson and will go from 10-2. You will need to buy tickets (for a suggested donation of $5.oo) which you can find around the city and at the Enchanted Garden on 13th Street. Be sure to let us know if you have any questions.

We are asking for volunteers to help show off our hard work at the garden and talk to guests about some of the unique features of our garden. Let S.J. or Anthony know if you are interested in doing so. This is our chance to show how cool our neighborhood really is!

Summer Expansion Project

Good News From the Peace Garden!

The Summer Expansion Project has been completed. This means that we have added two new garden plots and of course new plants. Additionally, we have finally purchased our rain barrel from the Millvale Borough. I would highly recommend the barrel. Corn, beans, and peppers 

along with beets, spinach, and peas have all been planted over the weekend. Now all we need is a little rain! When it's this dry, we appreciate if anyone can bring water for their own plants as well as any plants that look thirsty. I would like to thank everyone who has been endlessly hauling water to the garden over the past month. The work is really starting to pay off.

We are harvesting Swiss Chard, coriander, peppermint and ginger mint, basil, and a few remaining strawberries.

What's Happening at the Garden

This is Anthony for the garden update. I had a neighbor ask me earlier this week: "what's happening at the garden?" It's a good question, because we have not had too many activities lately.

The good news: We have a LOT to do.

As we always say, we turn vacant lots into a lot of fun. PGP turns an empty lot into a growing lot. Basically, we have a lot of fun. This year is no different.

We plan to lay out three large garden beds this year. The rear bed has strawberries already growing, artichokes, spinach, and horseradish. The middle bed has broccoli and kale. I am in the process of extending this bed now. It will have tomatoes, zucchini, and flowers. Finally, the front bed. I have not even begun to plow this yet, so any help would be much appreciated. Please let me know if you are interested. I have some peppers that would go well here, but there is a lot of space to fill, so also let me know if you want to see any other plants.

In short, that is what is going on at the garden this month. Hopefully we will have some fun activities before too long. We really hope that you get a chance to stop by and see how it looks!

May - Week One

Strawberries and Rain

It was quite a rainy, stormy week here in Pittsburgh. With that, we the plants are loving it and growing like mad! This is Anthony with another PGP update. 

"Spring has sprung"

As soon as the rain pauses, I plan to get into the garden at 11th and Bingham to till the soil. This year, we are ready to plant some tomatoes, broccoli, cilantro, lettuce, and beans. We already have artichokes, horseradish, grapes, raspberries, and strawberries growing. 

We will welcome any other additions that anyone would like to bring in. If you are unsure about where you would like to plant something, be sure to let us know and we will find the right spot together. The garden will also be in need of some weeding this spring. The only thing we ask is that you don't pull out anything that you DON'T KNOW what it is. When it doubt, let it be. 

As a final note for today, PGP is still trying to fill up the summer calendar... We are open to any community activities or groups that would like to work with our space. Just drop us an email and we'll pick a time for the event. We will be sure to post any updates or notices as they come in.
